It’s finally here. After nearly two years away from releasing new music, Lil Nas X is stepping back into the spotlight with “World’s Greatest!,” a song that feels like much more than a comeback single.
For the Grammy-winning rapper and singer, whose real name is Montero Hill, the song is tied closely to the words of his late mother, Tameka Hill. Before her death, she often reminded her son to “Walk by faith, not by sight.” Now, those words have taken on an even deeper meaning for him.
“As I move through life it resonates more and more,” he said about the phrase.
It is a simple message, but one that seems to capture exactly where Lil Nas X finds himself. He is looking ahead while also taking a good look at where he came from.
A Message From Mom
Lil Nas X, whose real name is Montero Hill, first announced “World’s Greatest!” on Wednesday, Sept. 30, through an Instagram video featuring a personal message from his mother.
In the video, the 27-year-old sits on his bed shirtless as a recording of Hill plays in the background.
“Hey Doobie, been calling you multiple times today. I just wanna say love you, keep your head up, continue to walk by faith not by sight. Let go and let God handle the rest. Everything else is gonna work itself in its own place,” Hill can be heard saying.
She adds, “Don’t give up. Never give up. Continue to walk by faith not sight, and let go and let God handle the rest. And I wanna say I love you. Don’t forget that. And I’ll call you again just to check up on you. Love you, bye.”
After the message concludes, dreamy chords from the “Old Town Road” hitmaker’s forthcoming single play as he holds up a notebook that says the name of the single, “World’s Greatest.”
“Walk by faith, not by sight” was my mom’s favorite phrase to say. As I move through life it resonates with me more & more. This one’s for the “World’s Greatest!” October 1, 2026 Thursday 12PM EST 🏆,” Nas captioned the post.
The message gives the new song an emotional starting point. What could have simply been another comeback single instead feels like a conversation between where Lil Nas X has been and where he hopes to go next.
Looking Back to Move Forward
“World’s Greatest!” builds on his mother’s words while giving Lil Nas X a mantra of his own.
“I hope your dreams work out for you/I hope your green comes out the blue/I hope you learn to love again/Yeah, I hope you learn to trust the plan.”
The rock-driven track finds him sounding confident, hopeful and ready to move forward. There is a clear sense of self-belief throughout the song, especially when he repeats, “I’m a champion.”
That confidence also carries into the music video, which was directed by Phillip Youmans.
The visual takes Lil Nas X back to his hometown of Atlanta, connecting his present-day self with memories from his childhood. At one point, he stands in front of his own reflection inside a dance studio, trying to move freely but struggling with a mental block.
Then, the memories begin to surface.
A younger version of Lil Nas X appears trying on high-heeled boots, falling asleep at church and sneaking candy bars from a corner store when the cashier isn’t looking. They may seem like small moments, but together they show some of the experiences that helped shape him.
His younger self eventually appears in the dance studio and teaches him to mirror his movements. As Lil Nas X follows along, his stiff movements become freer. His head is held high, and the tension that seemed to keep him stuck begins to disappear.
It is a simple idea, but an effective one. Sometimes moving forward means going back and reconnecting with the person you were before life became complicated.
Near the end of the song, a sample of the lyric “This one is for the champions,” from “Industry Baby,” plays as another reminder of the person Lil Nas X has become.
When the song ends, he is standing alone in the studio. Instead of walking away, he runs the song back again. This time, he looks more confident than before.
The voicemail from his mother returns at the end of the video, bringing everything full circle. Lil Nas X dedicated the video to her with a simple tribute: “Love u forever mommy.”
Remembering His Mother
Lil Nas X announced his mother’s death on Aug. 29 in an Instagram post.
“RIP TO THE BADDEST EVER! LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY. this one’s gonna hurt. 🥹🥹,” he wrote at the time.
He shared three photos alongside the message, including one of Hill looking at the camera, another of the mother and son together at an event and a third showing Hill with Lil Nas X when he was a child.
The loss came during a major period of change for the artist.
In June, Lil Nas X shared that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had entered rehab for mental health support. Not long after, he celebrated his “10,000th day alive,” sharing a video of a cake he made for the milestone on his Instagram Stories on Aug. 24.
His relationship with his mother had also been complicated. During a 2020 interview with Variety, Lil Nas X described her as an “addict” and explained that they had a strained relationship.
“She’s an addict, so we don’t have the closest relationship. Even trying to get her better — things didn’t quite work out. But there’s still love,” Nas told the publication at the time.
On Aug. 24, he shared a video to his Instagram Stories showing a cake he made to celebrate the milestone.
Lil Nas X released his debut album, Montero, in 2021.
