The Augusta Canoe & Kayak Club and the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area will host a cleanup along the Augusta Canal on Saturday, Oct. 3. Volunteers will gather at 9 a.m. at the Mill Village Trailhead, situated at 109 Eve St., behind the Salvation Army Kroc Center.
The cleanup aims to restore and beautify the waterway and surrounding trailheads. Participants will tackle litter and debris both on land and from the water.
Organizers said the effort will help protect wildlife habitats. It will also improve conditions for paddlers, runners, and cyclists who frequent the canal.
"The Augusta Canal is a jewel of our city, and keeping it pristine takes a village," said Russ Gambill of the Augusta Canoe & Kayak Club, according to WRDW. "Whether you clear debris from a kayak or help out along the trails, every set of hands makes a massive difference. We're proud to partner with the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area to protect this incredible resource."
The event welcomes paddlers, hikers, families, and civic groups. Volunteers helping from the water should bring their own canoe or kayak, paddles, and a personal flotation device. Those working on land should wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and durable clothing.
Organizers suggest bringing sunscreen, bug spray, and reusable water bottles. The Augusta Canal Authority will supply trash bags, gloves, and trash grabbers on-site.
