For Wiz Khalifa, one song did more than become a massive hit. It helped make sure he would always have a little something in the bank.
During a recent stream on Kick with DeenTheGreat, Wiz Khalifa opened up about the song from his career that has generated the most income. The answer was not hard for him to come up with. It was “See You Again,” his emotional collaboration with Charlie Puth from Furious 7.
At one point during the stream, Deen asked Wiz what song of his had made him the most money.
“What song made me the most money? ‘See You Again,’” he replied. “Not too many artists get the opportunity to have that big of a song in their career. Like, I’ma always be good because of that song. [It’s] one of the most popular songs ever.”
That is a pretty strong endorsement from the man who made it.
Released in 2015, “See You Again” became a worldwide hit while serving as a tribute to the late Paul Walker, who appeared in Furious 7, his final on-screen performance. The song became closely connected to the movie’s emotional ending, helping turn it into something much bigger than a typical soundtrack single.
The numbers back that up. “See You Again” debuted at No. 100 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 2015 before making a huge jump up the chart. By its fifth week, it had reached No. 1 and eventually spent 12 non-consecutive weeks at the top.
The music video also became a major part of the song’s legacy. Wiz pointed out that it remains one of the most popular videos on YouTube, where it has collected more than seven billion views.
“I could perform it anywhere in the world, no matter what language people speak… So, ‘See You Again’ is definitely a blessing,” he continued.
And that international reach is part of what makes the song so valuable for Wiz. A song does not need to be explained when the emotion behind it can cross language barriers. Whether someone knows every word or simply recognizes the melody, “See You Again” has become one of those songs that people around the world know.
But Wiz did not stop with the Charlie Puth collaboration. He also pointed to another career-defining song that means something different to him: “Black and Yellow.”
“And I’d say ‘Black and Yellow,’ too. Because that song is about my city. I’m from Pittsburgh, and we never really had an anthem, you know what I mean? So to be able to grow up in a city and to make the city anthem for the city, bro? That’s like a dream come true.”
Released in 2010, “Black and Yellow” became a signature song for Wiz and a celebration of his Pittsburgh roots. The track was built around the colors associated with Pittsburgh’s sports teams, making it especially easy for fans in the city to claim it as their own.
While “See You Again” gave Wiz a song with worldwide emotional reach, “Black and Yellow” gave him something deeply personal. One connected him to millions of listeners across the globe, while the other connected him directly to the city where he grew up.
Together, the two songs show two very different sides of Wiz Khalifa’s career. “See You Again” became a global phenomenon that continues to generate attention more than a decade after its release. “Black and Yellow” became a hometown anthem that helped turn Wiz into one of Pittsburgh’s most recognizable musical exports.
For Wiz, both songs represent more than streams, chart positions and money. They represent the kind of moments artists hope for when they are just getting started.
Still, there is something especially wild about hearing Wiz say he will “always be good” because of “See You Again.” The song may have been released in 2015, but its reach clearly has not slowed down.
When a track can dominate the charts, become part of a blockbuster movie’s emotional farewell, rack up billions of YouTube views and remain recognizable around the world years later, it is safe to say Wiz Khalifa caught a pretty big musical wave.
And judging by his comments, he knows exactly how lucky he was to be riding it.
