The Weeknd had plenty of reasons to keep the energy high during his latest show in Jakarta, Indonesia. But when he noticed a young fan being pushed against the barricade, the singer briefly hit pause to make sure she was okay.
During the first of two shows at the Jakarta International Stadium on Saturday (Sept. 26), The Weeknd noticed an older fan getting a little too aggressive near the front of the crowd. The moment happened while he was approaching the barricade to sing directly to a young fan.
In a clip from the concert, The Weeknd can be seen moving toward the barricade when another fan suddenly stepped in and pushed the young girl aside. The singer immediately noticed what happened and had a message for the older fan.
“Watch it,” he was heard telling the older fan before checking that the young fan was okay.
It was a quick moment, but it showed The Weeknd was paying close attention to what was happening beyond the stage. Concerts can get intense, especially when fans are packed close together, but that does not mean everyone gets to forget their manners.
A Fan With a Special Connection
The young fan has been identified as Katana, who overcame a battle with cancer in 2022 and has maintained contact with The Weeknd ever since, frequently appearing at his shows.
That history makes the moment even more meaningful. What might have looked like a simple interaction with a fan was actually part of a much longer connection between the singer and Katana.
The Weeknd has been performing around the world during the final leg of his After Hours til Dawn Tour, which kicked off all the way back in 2023. The massive tour has already traveled through multiple continents, and the current Asian leg is keeping the momentum going.
After beginning the Asian run with two shows at the Belluna Dome in Tokorozawa, Japan, just outside of Tokyo, The Weeknd moved on to Indonesia for his two Jakarta performances.
He is scheduled to continue the tour in Goyang, South Korea, followed by stops in Bangkok, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Weeknd Meets Evangelion
The Jakarta shows come shortly after The Weeknd made some noise in Japan with a surprise musical connection.
During his shows there, he premiered a new song that prominently samples Yoko Takahashi’s beloved Neon Genesis Evangelion theme song, “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis.”
The connection did not stop with the sample. The original song also got its own spotlight when The Weeknd brought out Takahashi as a surprise guest to perform the theme song in full.
For fans who grew up with Neon Genesis Evangelion, it was a pretty major crossover moment. For everyone else, it was another reminder that The Weeknd's current tour is about more than simply revisiting his biggest hits.
As the After Hours til Dawn Tour moves toward its next stops, The Weeknd is continuing to give fans plenty to talk about, whether it is an unexpected musical collaboration, a new song, or a quick pause to make sure a young fan is safe in the crowd.
