The stars came dressed to impress, the speeches brought plenty of emotion, and television’s biggest night had a few surprises up its sleeve.

Mariska Hargitay hosted the 78th Emmy Awards live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Monday, Sept. 14, with the ceremony airing on NBC and Peacock. The night celebrated another year of television, with several familiar faces taking home some of the industry’s biggest honors.

Matthew Rhys had an especially memorable evening, making history with two acting wins. Allison Janney and Jean Smart also tied an all-time record, while The Pitt, DTF St. Louis and Widow’s Bay were among the night’s biggest winners.

Of course, the Emmy action did not all happen in one night. The two-night Creative Arts Emmys were held Sept. 5 and Sept. 6, handing out awards in several categories before the main ceremony.

Shailene Woodley, David Harbour, Linda Cardellini and Betty Gilpin were among the Creative Arts winners. The late Rob Reiner also received an Emmy for guest actor for The Bear, earning a standing ovation. Hargitay, 62, had already picked up two Emmys for her documentary My Mom Jayne.

With plenty of trophies already handed out, the Sept. 14 ceremony added even more names to this year's winner's circle.

Comedy Takes Center Stage

Widow’s Bay had a big night, winning Outstanding Comedy Series and proving that the competition was anything but a laughing matter.

The series also helped Matthew Rhys take home Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. He beat out Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for Wonder Man, Steve Carell for Rooster, Jason Segel for Shrinking and Martin Short for Only Murders in the Building.

Jean Smart continued her impressive Emmy run by winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks. She faced competition from Quinta Brunson, Ayo Edebiri, Elle Fanning and Lisa Kudrow.

Stephen Root also brought home a comedy acting trophy, winning Outstanding Supporting Actor for Widow’s Bay. The category included Colman Domingo, Paul W. Downs, Harrison Ford, Nick Offerman, Michael Urie and Tyler James Williams.

Kate O’Flynn added another win for Widow’s Bay, taking Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Dale Dickey, Hannah Einbinder, Janelle James, Michelle Pfeiffer, Megan Stalter and Jessica Williams were also nominated.

The show's success continued in the writing and directing categories. Katie Dippold won Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for the Widow’s Bay episode “Welcome to Widow’s Bay!” Hiro Murai won Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for the same episode.

The Pitt Dominates Drama

When it came to drama, The Pitt had plenty to celebrate.

The medical drama won Outstanding Drama Series, beating out The Diplomat, The Gilded Age, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Paradise, Pluribus, Slow Horses and Your Friends & Neighbors.

Noah Wyle also earned Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for The Pitt. His competition included Sterling K. Brown, Gary Oldman, Mark Ruffalo and Rufus Sewell.

Rhea Seehorn took Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Pluribus. Carrie Coon, Chase Infiniti, Keri Russell and Zendaya were also nominated.

The supporting acting categories featured several The Pitt stars, but Tom Pelphrey won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Task. Patrick Ball, Billy Crudup, Shawn Hatosy, Gerran Howell, Jack Lowden and Carlos-Manuel Vesga were also nominated.

Allison Janney won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for The Diplomat. She competed against Taylor Dearden, Fiona Dourif, Katherine LaNasa, Sepideh Moafi, Julianne Nicholson and Karolina Wydra.

Pluribus picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, with Vince Gilligan winning for “We Is Us.” The category also included episodes from The Diplomat, The Pitt, Slow Horses and Task.

For directing, Saul Metzstein won for Slow Horses, taking the prize for the episode “Scars.” Other nominees included directors from The Gilded Age, Paradise, The Pitt, Pluribus and Task.

DTF St. Louis Takes Limited Series

The limited and anthology series race went to DTF St. Louis, which won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.

It beat All Her Fault, The Beast in Me, Beef and Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.

Matthew Rhys had another reason to celebrate here, winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for The Beast in Me. That gave him two acting victories during the ceremony.

Riz Ahmed, Jason Bateman, Charlie Hunnam and Oscar Isaac were also nominated in the category.

Sally Field won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Remarkably Bright Creatures. She competed against Claire Danes, Carey Mulligan, Sarah Pidgeon and Sarah Snook.

Reality and Variety Winners

The reality competition category also had a clear winner. The Traitors took Outstanding Reality Competition Program, beating Dancing with the Stars, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Survivor and Top Chef.

Meanwhile, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert won Outstanding Variety Series. It beat The Daily Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Saturday Night Live.

With comedy, drama, limited series, reality television and variety shows all represented, the 2026 Emmys gave fans plenty to talk about. Some familiar stars added more trophies to their shelves, while other winners got their first big Emmy moment.

And if television really is a competition, Widow’s Bay, The Pitt and DTF St. Louis certainly walked away looking like the class favorites.
