New details have emerged in the investigation into the death of actress Hayden Panettiere.

According to a report from TMZ, multiple law enforcement sources believe Panettiere took an oxycodone pill that was laced with fentanyl. Investigators believe she may have taken the pill on the morning of her death.

Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, at age 36. She was found unresponsive at a residence in South Carolina. The actress was known for her roles in Heroes and Nashville.

Investigators Are Looking Into the Source of the Pill

The investigation is now looking beyond South Carolina. Law enforcement officials are reportedly working to determine where the suspected pill came from. TMZ reports that Panettiere had a longtime drug supplier in Los Angeles who allegedly provided her with prescription medications, including oxycodone.

The Drug Enforcement Administration is also involved in the investigation. Authorities are working to trace the source of the drugs and determine how the suspected fentanyl-laced pill reached Panettiere.

Official Cause of Death Has Not Been Confirmed

While investigators reportedly believe fentanyl played a role, officials have not publicly released a final cause of death.

Toxicology results remain an important part of the investigation. An autopsy reportedly found no signs of trauma that contributed to Panettiere's death.

That distinction is important as the investigation continues. The reported findings from law enforcement sources have not yet replaced the official determination from the coroner.

Panettiere's Legacy

Panettiere became a familiar face to television audiences through her work on Heroes, the Bring It On Franchise, and her work as a child star. She later starred as Juliette Barnes on the country music drama Nashville, a role that connected her closely with the country music world.

Her death came just days before her 37th birthday. Panettiere had also spoken publicly about her struggles with addiction. Her experiences became part of her personal story and were discussed in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, which was published earlier in 2026.

The investigation into Hayden Panettiere's death remains ongoing. Authorities are continuing to investigate the drugs involved and their possible source.
