This loss was the fourth straight season-opening defeat for the program and sparked questions about whether changes are needed at the top.
LSU outgained the Tigers 644 yardhe s to 145. The home team recorded 38 first downs compared to eight for the visitors. By halftime, the score stood at 31-3 with LSU holding a 336-54 edge in total yards.
The offense converted just one of 13 third downs. They gained 105 passing yards for the game. Senior quarterback Christopher Vizzina threw for 83 yards on 10-of-16 passing before being replaced by freshman Tait Reynolds in the second quarter.
"Got our ass kicked," said Swinney, according to The Clemson Insider. "It was embarrassing."
Swinney has won two national championships since taking over as head coach in 2008. He's also captured nine ACC titles. The program won 15 games in both 2015 and 2018. From 2015 to 2019, they lost just five games total.
The Tigers went 7-6 last season for the second-worst record of the coach's career. They've now lost 15 games since the start of the 2023 campaign.
ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum said the program has become a "second-tier" team. "This program is horrifying to look at," said Finebaum to the Matt Barrie Show. "The game has passed him by."
The coach has a contract buyout of $57 million if fired during the 2026 season. That number climbs to $60 million if the school waits until after this season to make a decision.
The Tigers host Georgia Southern on Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. on ACC Network.
