Beyoncé gave $2 million to the Studio Museum in Harlem on Sept. 4. The gift marked her 45th birthday. She supports the institution's work with artists of African descent. The entertainer and art collector contributed this sum to aid the museum's mission by helping make art available to the community.

"Art tells all our stories; the past and the present, but is not always accessible to everyone," said Beyoncé, according to The Art Newspaper. "I have always been impressed with the Studio Museum in Harlem because of its intention to make the museum an integral part of the community. I have been introduced to several of my favorite young and upcoming Black artists through exhibits at the Museum."

Thelma Golden, the Studio Museum's director and chief curator, thanked the singer for recognizing what the institution means to people's lives. "This gift will allow us to continue strengthening our work for Harlemites, New Yorkers, and audiences across the globe," said Golden.

Artists, community activists, and philanthropists founded the institution in 1968. It's known for championing work by creators of African descent.

The museum's new home on West 125th Street opened to the public on Nov. 15, 2025. Adjaye Associates designed the building. Cooper Robertson served as executive architect. It is the first purpose-built home in the institution's history.

The new building lets the museum serve more visitors, offer extra learning opportunities for people of all ages, and expand exhibitions. It also strengthens the Artist-in-Residence program, which has supported over 100 graduates who have gone on to careers in the arts.

The donation came on the same day the singer released a deluxe edition of her second album, B'DAY, to mark the project's 20th anniversary. The remastered version features archive tracks and upgraded visuals.

Beyoncé also donated $200,000 to help Indiana recover from floods. She gave $1 million to Colombia after an earthquake crisis. Last year, she contributed $2.5 million to help families affected by the LA fires.

The Studio Museum is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm and on Fridays until 9:00 pm. Sundays are free.
