On Sept. 4, 2002, Kelly Clarkson was crowned the first winner of American Idol, securing 58% of the votes. Clarkson went on to have a groundbreaking career in music and TV, achieving three No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and three GRAMMY Awards from a total of 17 nominations. Simon Cowell sure can pick 'em. Keep reading for more Top 40 music history from Sept. 4.

Breakthrough Hits and Milestones

It's fascinating to reminisce over decade-defining songs:

  • 1967: The Doors released “People Are Strange,” which tackles themes of alienation and being an outsider. Written by vocalist Jim Morrison and guitarist Robby Krieger for the band's second album, Strange Days, the song peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has since been certified Platinum by the RIAA.
  • 1976: Fleetwood Mac's self-titled album hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, more than one year after its release. It was the first to feature Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks after Bob Welch's departure.
  • 1982: The Steve Miller Band's song “Abracadabra” — not to be confused with Lady Gaga's 2025 single — reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the group's third No. 1 hit.
  • 2012: Imagine Dragons released their debut album, Night Visions, featuring the hit singles “Radioactive” and “Demons.” This album helped define the genre-blurring sound of pop-rock and alternative music in the early 2010s, setting the band up for long-term commercial success.

Cultural Milestones

Music has a significant cultural impact, as these Sept. 4 events show:

  • 1940: Sonny Charles was born in Blytheville, Arkansas. He is the former lead vocalist of the R&B/soul group Checkmates, Ltd. , best known for their 1969 hit “Black Pearl,” which peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at No. 8 on the Billboard R&B Singles chart. He would later have a moderately successful solo career, releasing hits such as “Put It in a Magazine” and “Always on My Mind.”
  • 1960: Kim Thayil, lead guitarist of the pioneering grunge band Soundgarden, was born in Seattle, Washington.  He is a two-time GRAMMY Award winner and an inductee of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
  • 1971: Paul & Linda McCartney's “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey” began a one-week stay at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Released as a single from the couple's only album, Ram, the song would be McCartney's first solo No. 1 in the United States. It was also his first gold record since the breakup of The Beatles.
  • 1975: Mark Ronson was born in London, England. A ten-time GRAMMY-winner, Ronson has produced numerous chart-breaking hits as a solo artist and for stars such as Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Robbie Williams, Nas, Lady Gaga, Sam Smith, and Miley Cyrus.
  • 1976: “You Should Be Dancing” by the Bee Gees topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This song features on the soundtrack of the iconic movie Saturday Night Fever, which was released the following year.
  • 1981: Beyoncé Giselle Knowles was born on this day in Houston, Texas. Her hometown inspired the artist's 2024 album Cowboy Carter.
  • 2004: Simon Cowell's new music competition show, The X Factor, debuted in the U.K. The British version launched the careers of several talented artists, including Olly Murs, One Direction, Cher Lloyd, Little Mix, and Leona Lewis.
  • 2023: Diana Ross made a surprise appearance at Beyoncé's Los Angeles concert. Ross performed her hit “Love Hangover” before leading the crowd in singing “Happy Birthday” to honor Queen Bey.

Notable Recordings and Performances

Several A-list rock acts put out landmark albums on this day.

  • 1970: The Rolling Stones dropped their second live album, Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!, which was recorded in Baltimore and New York. It made history by becoming the first live album to top the UK Albums Chart. In the US, it peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200.
  • 2001: System of a Down released their critically acclaimed second album, Toxicity, which would solidify their status as one of the biggest alternative metal bands in the world. Its three singles, “Chop Suey,”  “Toxicity,” and “Aerials,” all made it onto the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 76, No. 70, and No. 55, respectively. Meanwhile, the album itself would debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with first-week sales of 220,000 copies.

Industry Changes and Challenges

The music industry is complex, as these events from Sept. 4 show:

  • 2012: One Direction won a legal dispute over the right to their band name. The U.S. boy band that sued them changed their name to Uncharted Shores.
  • 2022: In a controversial ruling, a judge in California dismissed a lawsuit against Nirvana made by Spencer Elden, who appeared naked on the band's 1991 album Nevermind. Elden alleged sexual exploitation.
  • 2023: Steve Harwell, frontman of the rock band Smash Mouth, died of liver failure at the age of 56. He first achieved success with the group's 1997 single “Walkin' on the Sun,” from their debut album Fush Yu Mang, which topped the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. Their second album, Astro Lounge (1999), would catapult them to international stardom, thanks to hits such as “All Star” and “Then The Morning Comes.”
  • 2023: Gary Wright died at the age of 80 of causes which were never made public. He had his musical breakthrough with the release of his third album, The Dream Weaver (1975), which peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard 200. The project spawned the hit singles “Dream Weaver” and “Love Is Alive,” both of which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • 2024: Oasis announced additional tour dates for their surprise reunion tour. The group cited unprecedented fan demand as the reason for their decision.

Turns out we have Simon Cowell to thank for many memorable Sept. 4 events — this date must have the X Factor.
