Karol G and Bruno Mars are giving the people what they want: more of the chemistry that made their “Still” collaboration impossible to ignore.
Just hours before Mars surprised fans by showing up at Karol G’s concert at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, the two singers were busy creating some magic of their own. They got together to film scenes for the music video for “Still,” and the result is every bit as romantic as fans might have hoped.
Karol and Mars dropped the music video on Wednesday, Sept. 2. Filmed almost entirely in black and white, the video gives the song a dreamy, old-school feel while following the pair through some very cozy moments.
From backstage to center stage
The video starts with Karol and Mars trading lyrics in the green room before the action moves backstage. There is even a go-kart scene, because apparently emotional heartbreak and racing around backstage can coexist.
The biggest focus, though, is the connection between the two singers. They eventually settle into the seats of an empty stadium, getting close as they sing about the kind of love that refuses to completely disappear.
“I’d still sleep in your sweater / Still feel you in the dark / I’d still keep all your letters / I won’t tear them apart / I’d still hope you were happy,” Karol sings in the chorus. “Even though it’d be hard / ‘Cause I’d still love you / Even with a broken heart / Even with a broken heart (Heart).”
Those lyrics set the mood for the entire video. “Still” is about holding onto feelings even when a relationship has changed, and the black-and-white visuals make the song feel even more nostalgic.
Then the video takes fans from an empty stadium to a very full one.
Eventually, the music video cuts to their live debut of the song on Aug. 15 in front of more than 50,000 screaming fans.
A song Karol G almost can’t believe happened
“Still” was featured on Karol’s latest studio album No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto, which translates to English as I Don’t Regret Feeling So Much.
The collaboration also represents something bigger for Karol. The Colombian superstar has built much of her career singing in Spanish, but “Still” gave her a chance to connect with listeners in English.
Speaking with Rolling Stone about the album, the “Tusa” singer said that recording a song with the “Uptown Funk” singer was “something I still can’t believe.”
“I feel like what happened with this song is that I really fell in love with it, and I really wanted to include a song in English on my album where I was speaking to a specific audience,” Karol told the outlet. “If I had the opportunity to connect differently, like, now that we’re going to Coachella and you start to see that there’s a new audience and might not speak Spanish at all.”
For Karol, making the song in English was not about suddenly changing who she is as an artist. Instead, it was about following the song where it naturally wanted to go.
In an Aug. 7 TikTok, the “Provenza” singer opened up about singing entirely in English.
“I don’t want people to just see it as, ‘Oh, Karol G’s new English song,’” Karol said. “I’ve always been open to making music in other languages without pressure, as long as it flows and happens organically and naturally and, well, that song found me. It expressed exactly what I was feeling and how I was feeling it. It was literally perfect for what I was going through, and I listened to it constantly. I tried to overthink it, but it was perfect — I hope it touches many people’s hearts.”
And then Bruno showed up
The timing of the video release made the “Still” era even more exciting for fans.
Karol is currently on the road for her Viajando Por El Mundo Tropitour, which is in support of her latest album. Mars is also on the road in support of his new album The Romantic.
With both stars touring, the chance to see them perform “Still” together is already a big deal. Add in a surprise appearance from Mars at Karol’s Los Angeles show, and fans suddenly had even more reason to scream.
The music video captures that same excitement while giving “Still” a more intimate setting. Instead of a massive stage filled with lights and thousands of fans, viewers get to see Karol and Mars simply hanging out, singing and sharing the moment.
For a song about still loving someone even after heartbreak, the two certainly know how to make the “still” part convincing.
