Miley Cyrus has announced her new album, Bass Persuades, which arrives Sept. 18 through Atlantic Records. The announcement also comes with a new look, a new stage name and, most importantly, new music.
Cyrus shared the news on Instagram along with a personal explanation of what the album title means to her.
“Music takes hold of us. We feel it, sing it, sometimes dance to it, let it out and carry on. It is powerful, vulnerable, sweet and strong,” she wrote. “Heart full, heartache, every part of life in between. That’s what the title means to me. Thank you for being a part of making my wildest dreams come true. I sincerely hope you love this album.”
That is quite a mission statement for an album. And Cyrus is not stopping with the studio release.
Miley Is Heading Back to the Stage
Cyrus will make a rare return to live performances with a two-night run at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. She is scheduled to perform Oct. 16 and 18 at the historic venue.
Based on her Instagram announcement, it appears Cyrus plans to perform Bass Persuades in full. Model/Actriz will join her as a special guest.
For fans who have been waiting to hear what this new era sounds like, those shows could offer an early chance to experience the album live.
The announcement itself was almost a performance. On Sunday, Cyrus teased the news by purchasing a wrap-around cover of the Los Angeles Times featuring only her first name and her face. She also updated her website with the same image.
The message seems pretty clear: For now, she is simply Miley.
Her last name appears to have been dropped from her artist name for this era, and she is referred to as Miley in the press release. It is a small change, but it gives the new album cycle its own identity.
A New Label, A New Chapter
The album will also mark Cyrus' first release with Atlantic Records after she signed with the label.
Variety recently confirmed that the singer signed with Atlantic after releasing two albums on Columbia. Those albums included Endless Summer Vacation, which featured her Grammy-winning smash “Flowers.”
“Flowers” became one of the biggest songs of Cyrus' career, so following it with a new album is no small move. But Cyrus has suggested that she is less interested in simply repeating past success and more interested in following wherever the music takes her.
Earlier this year, Cyrus appeared on the cover of Variety while reflecting on her career and the lasting impact of Hannah Montana. Now, she is looking ahead once again.
In a recent issue of Wonderland, Cyrus discussed her approach to songwriting during a conversation with actor Darryl Hannah.
“For me, a song isn’t just chords, melody, and lyrics. It’s a feeling,” she said in a discussion with actor Darryl Hannah. “It’s not right or wrong like an answer. It’s alive. It almost becomes its own little entity that tells you what it needs if you’re listening. I love making records with people who aren’t precious about ideas. Everyone is there because they’re excited by the same thing. There’s no ego in the room when it’s working. Just curiosity. It’s really special to be surrounded by people who want to surprise each other and are comfortable throwing an idea away or expanding on it.”
That description gives a pretty good idea of the creative mindset behind Bass Persuades. Cyrus seems to view songwriting less like solving a puzzle and more like discovering something that is already waiting to be found.
When Hannah asked about her favorite part of making music, Cyrus offered an even more personal answer.
“I love feeling aligned with my purpose, my power, and my gifts. I feel closest to something bigger than myself when records flow through me. It’s almost impossible to describe. It’s like waking up from a dream you can still feel in your body even though you can’t fully explain it logically. Songwriting feels like crossing over to another side sometimes. A new song can feel like I’ve already heard it before. Even if it isn’t finished yet, I somehow know exactly what it is, almost like I’m remembering it instead of creating it,” she concluded. “That’s the mystery I love.”
Now fans get to hear what that mystery sounds like.
With Bass Persuades arriving Sept. 18 and two Hollywood Bowl performances coming in October, Cyrus is clearly ready to turn the page. And if the album title is any indication, she wants listeners to feel the music as much as they hear it.
