Breakthrough Hits and Milestones

• 1988: George Michael earned his fourth U.S. No. 1 hit with "Monkey." Its success helped to establish him as a dominant late '80s pop force.
• 1991: Pearl Jam released Ten. Their debut album became one of grunge's defining works.
• 1994: Boyz II Men started a 14-week run at No. 1 with "I'll Make Love to You." The R&B ballad tied the record for longest stay atop the U.S. charts before being dethroned by their own follow-up, "On Bended Knee."
• 1996: Pearl Jam issued their fourth studio LP, No Code. The album dominated the Billboard 200 for two weeks. It also produced a number of hits, including “Off He Goes” and “Who You Are.” The latter broke into the Top 40 in the U.S., stalling at No. 31.  
• 2002: Queens of the Stone Age's third studio effort, Songs for the Deaf, was released. This album peaked at No. 4 on the U.K. Official Albums Chart. It spawned standout songs such as “No One Knows” and “Go with the Flow.” 
• 2012: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis released "THRIFT SHOP." A playful ode to secondhand fashion, the single went on to top the Hot 100 and redefine indie hip-hop's place on pop radio.

Cultural Milestones

• 1965: The Beatles met Elvis Presley at his Bel Air home. It was a historic meeting between the Fab Four and the King of Rock and Roll.
• 1986: Tina Turner received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. With over 100 million records sold worldwide, Turner's honor highlighted her transformation from band frontwoman to global icon.
• 1986: Mario was born to Shawntia Hardaway and Derryl Barrett Sr. in Baltimore, Maryland. He began performing at local talent shows when he was a little over 10. At 14, he landed his first record deal, signing with Clive Davis' J Records. In the years that followed, Mario scored a number of Top 40 singles in the U.S., including “Just A Friend 2002” and “Let Me Love You.”
• 1998: Rod Wave was born Rodarius Marcell Green in St. Petersburg, Florida. He started his professional music career in 2015. As of this writing, he has multiple Top 40 singles on Billboard's Hot 100. That list features titles such as “Tombstone,” “Call Your Friends,” and “Street Runner.”
• 2008: The Democratic National Convention brought music and politics together. Kanye West, Rage Against the Machine, John Legend, and others performed in Denver as the 2008 election campaign took center stage.
• 2017: Kendrick Lamar won Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs). His visuals for "HUMBLE." stood out as one of the most acclaimed videos of the decade. That same night, Taylor Swift debuted the polarizing video for "Look What You Made Me Do," which dominated headlines.

Notable Recordings and Performances

• 1990: Stevie Ray Vaughan played his final show. The blues guitarist closed a concert in Wisconsin with Eric Clapton before dying tragically in a helicopter crash hours later.
• 2013: Miley Cyrus sparked controversy at the MTV VMAs because of her provocative performance with Robin Thicke. There was immediate backlash from the Parents Television Council.
• 2018: 5 Seconds of Summer performed “She's Kinda Hot,” “Amnesia,” and “She Looks So Perfect” at RBC Echo Beach in Toronto, Canada. This show was part of the Meet You There Tour, a trek that featured over 50 concerts to promote their third studio LP, Youngblood. Released in June of the same year, the record topped the Billboard 200. 
• 2022: At the Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, Wiz Khalifa wowed the audience with memorable performances of “Black and Yellow,” “Roll Up,” “See You Again,” and other songs. He was on the Vinyl Verse Summer Tour 2022, a 28-city co-headlining concert tour that featured Logic. Logic, the Maryland native, also took the stage, playing songs such as “Homicide” and “1-800-273-8255.” 
• 2025: Linkin Park's From Zero World Tour visited the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This concert saw the band play over 20 tracks, including “In the End,” “BURN IT DOWN,” and “Points of Authority.” Note that the From Zero World Tour, which supported their No. 2 record From Zero, grossed over $200 million across more than 50 shows. 

Industry Changes and Challenges

• 1967: Brian Epstein accidentally overdosed on barbiturates and was found dead in his London home. Born in Liverpool, England, Epstein's most notable feat was discovering The Beatles and successfully managing their music career. With his guidance, the band placed more than 15 No. 1 singles on the Hot 100, including “Hey Jude” and “She Loves You.” Epstein worked with other well-known acts as well, such as Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, as well as Gerry and the Pacemakers.
• 1989: During a flight from Indianapolis to Arizona, Izzy Stradlin of Guns N' Roses relieved himself on a plane. According to sources, he was upset about waiting too long to use the aircraft's restroom. At the same time, Stradlin allegedly smoked in a non-smoking area and then verbally attacked one of the flight attendants. Upon arriving at the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, he was consequently arrested on charges of public disturbance. 
• 2007: Kevin Federline sought legal fees from Britney Spears while claiming a discrepancy between Spears' $737,868 monthly income and his own.
• 2018: Former Spice Girl Mel B entered rehab for alcohol and sex addiction after a messy divorce. This led to broader discussions about the stress of being famous.
