Peter Cullen, the actor whose unmistakable voice helped define Transformers for more than four decades, has died at 85.
Cullen, best known as the voice of Autobot leader Optimus Prime, died Wednesday, August 26, at his Los Angeles home. His agent confirmed his death, but a cause of death was not shared.
The news marks the loss of one of the most recognizable voices in animation. For generations of Transformers fans, Cullen was Optimus Prime. His deep, steady delivery helped turn the heroic robot into one of the franchise's most enduring characters.
“Peter Cullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family - and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide,” Cullen’s family said in a statement shared with the The Hollywood Reporter. “His family asks that you honor his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty and always remember 'be strong enough to be gentle.’”
The Voice That Defined Optimus Prime
According to outlet, Cullen's career stretched across decades and included work in film, television, animation, and video games. But his most famous role was undoubtedly Optimus Prime, whom he voiced in numerous Transformers movies, TV shows, and video games.
Cullen's approach to the character started with one important piece of information: Optimus Prime was a hero.
“I auditioned like everybody else,” he said in a 2014 interview with NPR. “I was told it was a hero, and I was told it was a truck.”
Cullen told NPR that he discussed the audition with his brother Larry, a Marine who had just returned from Vietnam. His brother encouraged him not to do “a Hollywood stereotypical thing with the yelling and screaming.”
That advice helped Cullen create a voice that was commanding without simply being loud. Optimus Prime sounded like a leader, but also someone who valued courage, loyalty, and compassion.
Cullen continued voicing the character through different eras of the Transformers franchise, helping introduce Optimus Prime to new generations of fans.
Eeyore Was a Completely Different Story
While Optimus Prime made Cullen a legend among Transformers fans, another character showed just how much range he had.
Cullen also voiced Eeyore in several Winnie the Pooh projects. The gloomy donkey was a world away from the heroic Optimus Prime, but Cullen made him just as memorable.
“I enjoyed doing Eeyore because he was simply charming. And I get an awful lot of reactions from, especially, young kids, when I go up and just say [in Eeyore's voice], ‘Hello. Thanks for noticing me,’” he told NPR.
That contrast became one of the most interesting parts of Cullen's career. He could play a giant robot leader one day and a gloomy cartoon donkey the next, using his voice to give each character a completely different personality.
His Voice Reached Far Beyond Transformers
Cullen's credits went well beyond Optimus Prime and Eeyore.
He provided the voice for King Kong in the 1976 film remake and came up with the frightening clicking sounds for the creature in Predator.
His animation work included Ironhide in Transformers, Monterey Jack in Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers, and Super Mario in the Saturday Supercade cartoons.
He also voiced K.A.R.R. in Knight Rider, Coran and King Alfor in Lion Voltron, Ramrod in Saber Rider, and many other characters.
For many fans, that means Cullen's voice was part of their childhood in ways they may not have even realized at the time.
A Lasting Transformers Legacy
Cullen's death leaves behind a career that helped shape how animated characters sound.
Optimus Prime could have been just another fictional robot. Instead, Cullen gave him a voice that made him feel like a real leader. The character's strength came through without losing his sense of kindness.
That may be why his family's final message feels so connected to the role Cullen played for so many years.
“Peter Cullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family - and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide,” Cullen’s family said.
His family asked fans to honor his legacy through compassion, integrity, loyalty, and service to their communities.
Cullen is survived by his children Angus, Claire, Pilar, and Clay.
For more than 40 years, Peter Cullen gave Optimus Prime a voice. Now, that voice has become part of Transformers history.
