For Kehlani, the show must go on, just not quite yet.
The R&B singer has canceled two upcoming concerts after becoming sick and being told by doctors that she is not cleared to perform. Kehlani shared the news with fans on Instagram Wednesday, Aug. 26, explaining that her illness became painful enough to send her to the hospital.
“After two off days feeling completely normal, I’ve been up all night unable to swallow & in so much pain,” the “Folded” singer wrote. “I just left the hospital & am not cleared to sing for the next two shows. I’m so sorry.”
The canceled shows are scheduled for Camden, N.J., and Washington, D.C. Kehlani said her team is already working on a solution for fans affected by the cancellations.
“Camden & DC. My team is working on a solution,” she continued. “Breaks my heart to have to ever do this. I do everything I’m supposed to to ensure my health stays up to par & it still isn’t guaranteed. We will pick back up in Virginia.”
The Tour Will Continue
Kehlani is currently traveling across North America as part of her self-titled world tour. Following the two canceled performances, she is scheduled to return to the stage at the Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront in Richmond, Va., on Saturday, Aug. 29.
For now, though, the singer has not shared additional details about what illness she is dealing with. While fans may be disappointed to miss a performance, Kehlani's message makes it clear that getting healthy has to come first.
The timing also comes shortly after Kehlani opened up about another important part of her health. In a Billboard cover story published Aug. 20, the two-time Grammy winner discussed her mental and physical wellness, including the routines she follows while managing her bipolar disorder diagnosis.
Kehlani explained that staying balanced requires more than simply taking a break when life gets overwhelming. She has built regular habits into her life to help support her overall well-being.
“I take medicine,” Kehlani told the outlet. “I have to go to the gym; it’s not an option. I have to do yoga, take walks. I have to spend time in nature: sit in the park or go wiggle my toes in somebody’s grass. I have to build a relationship with God. I have to pray.”
Making Time for Wellness
Kehlani also explained why having a routine matters so much when working in an industry that can make normal schedules difficult to maintain.
“You get in this cycle where you wake up at 6 p.m. because you were at the studio until 7 a.m.,” she said. “You’ve missed a whole day of sunshine. There’s no meal. You go back to the studio at 8 p.m. You grind or die. I have to have a routine supporting my wellness so I can freaking survive.”
That routine is especially important for an artist whose career often means late nights, travel and packed schedules. But her latest health scare is another reminder that sometimes the body gets the final say, no matter how carefully someone plans.
For Kehlani, that means stepping away from the stage for now and focusing on getting better. Fans will have to wait a little longer to see her perform in Camden and D.C., while her team works out what comes next.
