American Airlines Is Bringing Seatback Screens Back to Its Planes

If you like watching a movie without holding your phone for an entire flight, American Airlines has some good news.

The airline announced a major cabin upgrade on August 18, 2026. American plans to add seatback entertainment screens to every seat across its narrowbody fleet.

The move marks a significant change in the airline's approach to in-flight entertainment. For years, American encouraged passengers to use their own phones, tablets and laptops instead of relying on built-in screens.

That strategy is about to change.

The new entertainment system will feature 4K screens at every seat. Passengers will also be able to connect their wireless headphones through Bluetooth.

The screens will offer movies, television shows, music, games and other entertainment options. Passengers will also have access to flight information through the system.

USB-C fast charging will be included as well. That could be especially useful for travelers who arrive at the airport with a phone battery that is already running low.

American says the screens will be among the largest available on narrowbody aircraft in North America.

Travelers shouldn't expect to see the new screens on every American flight right away.

The airline says new Airbus and Boeing narrowbody aircraft will begin arriving with the upgraded entertainment systems in 2028. American will also retrofit existing aircraft.

The full rollout will take several years. American expects the project to continue into the early 2030s.

That means passengers could see a mix of aircraft for quite some time. One American flight might have the new screens, while another could still rely on personal devices for entertainment.

The entertainment upgrade isn't the only change American Airlines announced.

The carrier also plans to increase the amount of premium seating on its narrowbody planes. American currently has premium seats on about 25% of its narrowbody capacity.

The goal is to push that number to roughly 40%.

That includes more First Class seats and additional Main Cabin Extra seating. Some aircraft will receive another row of First Class seats, while other planes will get additional extra-legroom options.

For passengers, that could mean more opportunities to pay for a little extra space on domestic flights.

The changes won't happen overnight. However, American is clearly betting that passengers want more than just a seat and a way to get online.

New entertainment screens, faster Wi-Fi and more premium seating could make a noticeable difference on longer domestic flights.

Families may also appreciate having built-in entertainment options. So might travelers who don't want to use their personal devices for an entire flight.

For now, passengers will have to wait a little longer.

But starting in 2028, American Airlines travelers can expect to see a very familiar feature making its way back into the cabin: the seatback screen.

And for anyone who remembers the days of choosing a movie before takeoff, it looks like that era isn't quite over after all.
