Sean "Diddy" Combs is fighting back against producer Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones, and this time, the dispute is moving into documentary territory.
According to court documents obtained and reported by XXL on Thursday (Aug. 13), Diddy filed a counterclaim on Tuesday (Aug. 11), accusing Jones of taking video footage that allegedly belonged to him. Jones previously sued Diddy for sexual assault, harassment and unpaid work.
In the new filing, Diddy's attorneys claim Jones misused his access to the music mogul's personal material. They accused Jones of "shamelessly abusing his position of trust to gain unauthorized access to video footage belonging to Diddy to violate federal and state laws and...to spread baseless lies about Mr. Combs in pursuit of an undeserved payout."
That's a serious accusation, and the footage at the center of the dispute reportedly has a connection to one of the biggest Diddy stories of the past year.
A Documentary Becomes Part of the Legal Fight
Diddy's attorneys claim Jones stole computer drives containing footage that was intended for a documentary about Diddy's own life. Instead, they allege Jones sold the footage to Netflix and/or 50 Cent for the rapper's documentary about Diddy.
That documentary is Sean Combs: The Reckoning, a four-part Netflix series executive produced by 50 Cent. The project explored Diddy's rise in music, the allegations of sexual misconduct against him and his eventual arrest on federal sex crime charges.
The series also became a major success for 50 Cent. It pulled in millions of views and earned three Emmy nominations, something Fif was more than happy to celebrate.
Now, Diddy's legal team says the alleged use of the footage caused their client both financial and reputational damage.
"As a result of Mr. Jones's unlawful conduct, Mr. Combs lost the exclusive use of his footage and suffered significant financial and reputational harm," Diddy's attorneys argue in their counterclaim.
Jones Continues to Stand by His Claims
The counterclaim comes more than two years after Jones filed his original lawsuit. Since bringing his bombshell $30 million case, Jones has continued to stand by his allegations that Diddy sexually assaulted him and pressured him into sexual encounters with sex workers while Jones worked on Diddy's Grammy-nominated album, Love Album: Off The Grid, between September of 2022 and November of 2023.
Jones has also spoken publicly about his experience. In an interview with Rolling Stone in August of 2024, he described Diddy in harsh terms.
"He's a monster. He'll do whatever is necessary to get exactly what he wants. He doesn’t take no for an answer. He [told me] himself, 'I'll smack my mama.' Anybody who can say that even jokingly is a monster," he told Rolling Stone in August of 2024.
Jones' lawsuit is one of several legal cases filed against Diddy since November of 2023. The latest counterclaim adds another layer to a legal battle that has already stretched far beyond the recording studio.
For now, Diddy's side is arguing that the fight is not only about the allegations Jones made, but also about footage they say was taken and used without permission. With a Netflix documentary now part of the dispute, the battle over Diddy's story has taken yet another turn.
