Christopher Vizzina sits atop the depth chart for Clemson's quarterback position. But true freshman Tait Reynolds isn't making it easy. The competition heats up as fall camp approaches, with head coach Dabo Swinney framing the situation in clear terms: Vizzina's job to lose, Reynolds' chance to take.

The Birmingham native started one game last season. Against SMU on Oct. 18, he threw three touchdowns and racked up 317 yards while completing 29 of 42 attempts in a 35-24 defeat at Memorial Stadium. Over 14 games spanning 238 snaps, Vizzina has connected on 61% of his throws for 596 yards, four scores, and one pick. He's also scrambled for 109 yards and a touchdown across 38 rushes.

Sports Illustrated pegged Vizzina at No. 50 when ranking all 68 projected Power 4 starters before the 2026 season kicked off. The Athletic dropped him to No. 53 out of 138 projected FBS starters.

"He's just OK," an ACC personnel staffer said, according to The Clemson Insider. "He didn't do anything where I'm like, 'Oh my, I'm scared of him.'"

Reynolds brings serious credentials. The four-star recruit from Arizona in the class of 2026 drew offers from both in-state programs, plus Florida State, Miami, Oregon, and Tennessee. During the spring game, he went 7 for 10, threw for 64 yards, and punched in a rushing score. Vizzina managed 10 of 18 for 95 yards and one touchdown in that same scrimmage.

USA TODAY Sports ranked this quarterback competition No. 4 on its list of eight must-watch battles as fall camp nears. College football analyst Austin Curtright sees real potential in the freshman challenger.

"There didn't seem to be much quarterback controversy in Clemson heading into the season until Dabo Swinney revealed true freshman Tait Reynolds is pushing returning QB Christopher Vizzina for the starting gig," Curtright said, according to Clemson Wire.

Fall camp kicks off Aug. 6 with the first official preseason practice. Clemson opens its 2026 season at LSU on Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m. on ABC.
