Lollapalooza will introduce a Motorola-sponsored ferris wheel when the festival kicks off on Thursday, July 30, at Grant Park in Chicago. The four-day event runs from Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 2. More 170 acts will perform across eight stages.
The Razr Wheel, a free ferris wheel attraction sponsored by Motorola, will give guests a chance to escape crowds. They can see the festival grounds and Chicago skyline from above. Other returning attractions include the Bud Light Sounds Bar, the Chase Freedom Club, and the Snapchat charm bracelet making station, according to Chicago Star Media.
Headliners for the 35th annual event include Lorde, Charli XCX, the Smashing Pumpkins, and John Summit. Tate McRae and Olivia Dean will also top the bill. The event draws an estimated 400,000 people each year. It sells out annually.
Jennie from BlackPink will become the first solo female K-pop act to headline a main stage. Folk-rock and alternative performers such as Geese, Sombr, and Yungblud will also appear. Turnstile and Clipse round out the lineup. It's really a mix of genres and styles of music, as is usually the case with Lolla.
Perry Farrell created the concept in 1991 as a farewell tour for Jane's Addiction. The initial tour was a commercial success. It made stops in almost 20 North American cities. Spin named the original event the greatest concert of the last 35 years in 2020.
The event ran yearly until 1997 before being brought back in 2003. Low ticket sales forced organizers to cancel the 2004 tour despite expanding dates to two days per city.
Farrell and the William Morris Agency redesigned the event into its current format as an annual Chicago festival in 2005 with Capital Sports Entertainment. Live Nation Entertainment acquired a majority stake in C3 Presents in 2014.
Disney+ and Hulu will livestream select sets across all four days. Four-day passes are sold out. Single-day wristbands remain available. For more information, visit the event's official website.
