Rare writing demos from the original songwriting sessions appear on the release. "Melt Away" and "I Am Free" both get this treatment. Nobody has accessed these recordings until now.
"This album marked an era of firsts for me: my first rap collaboration on the iconic 'Fantasy' remix with O.D.B., my first time working with JD, my first world tour, my first time directing a music video on my own, and so many more," the singer wrote in an Instagram post. "Most notably, this is the first time I've ever agreed (or rather, been convinced) to release my private writing sessions for 'I Am Free' (with Walter A.) and 'Melt Away' (with Babyface)."
The package includes "One Night," a 1995 recording that sat in the vault until now, plus "Slipping Away" and a fresh remix of "Underneath the Stars" that Eric Kupper produced. Live performances from Madison Square Garden, Tokyo Dome, and Rotterdam Ahoy complete the set.
The original album hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in October 1995. Six weeks passed with the album sitting at the top. "Fantasy" made history when it became the first song by a woman to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
"One Sweet Day," featuring Boyz II Men, dominated the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 1 across 16 straight weeks. "Always Be My Baby" also climbed to the top spot. The Recording Industry Association of America stamped the album with 11 platinum certifications, and worldwide sales passed 27 million copies.
The RIAA awarded new certifications to two singles. "Fantasy" received eight times platinum status, while "Always Be My Baby" earned seven times platinum.
Physical versions arrive on Oct. 16 in three formats: triple LP, two-CD set, or cassette. The vinyl edition packs in the full 1995 Madison Square Garden concert performance — its first vinyl appearance — along with other tracks making their vinyl debut.
Amazon will also sell an exclusive baby pink vinyl variant, but only one LP exists in limited quantity. The two-CD set features versions of "Always Be My Baby" and "Open Arms" that were recorded during the June 17, 1996, show in Rotterdam, Netherlands, but never released before.
