Sometimes promoting a new song means dropping a teaser or posting a few photos. For Tinashe, it meant grabbing a sledgehammer, finding a white BMW in a Los Angeles parking lot, and letting loose. Even better, she invited a surprised fan to join in.

The car-smashing moment was all part of the rollout for "Crash Out," Tinashe's new single, which arrived Thursday (July 16), along with the announcement of her eighth studio album, Popstar. The project is set to release Sept. 25 through Nice Life/Atlantic Records.

A Surprise Smash Session

On Wednesday (July 15), content creator Christian Vierling shared a video showing Tinashe repeatedly striking the BMW with a sledgehammer while letting out a few grunts with every swing.

“I have no problem with this,” Vierling said. “I respect what you’re doing.”

“You wanna get a couple hits in?” Tinashe replied.

Vierling happily accepted the invitation and even asked the singer to record a video he could send to his girlfriend. After taking his turn with the sledgehammer, he shattered the passenger-side headlight and knocked off the side-view mirror.

The experience seemed to be exactly what he needed.

“Felt really good,” Vierling said, referring to getting rid of some pent-up energy.

“Is that why you do that?” Vierling asked.

“Exactly,” Tinashe replied. “That’s a good crash out right there.”

Building Toward Popstar

"Crash Out" is the second single from Popstar, following "Too Easy." On that track, Tinashe appeared to call out artists who borrow inspiration from her signature style.

The upcoming album follows her 2024 release, Quantum Baby, which helped reignite her momentum thanks to the viral hit "Nasty." The song climbed to No. 61 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving Tinashe her first appearance on the chart since her 2014 breakout hit, "2 On," featuring ScHoolboy Q.

If smashing a luxury car is any indication, Tinashe is kicking off her next album era with plenty of energy and isn't afraid to make a memorable entrance.
