BTS has never been shy about dropping clues for fans, but this time they skipped social media and took over the morning paper.
Instead of teasing new music through cryptic posts or short videos, the K-pop superstars grabbed attention with full-page newspaper ads that looked like sensational tabloid headlines. The unusual campaign quickly had fans talking, searching for hidden meanings, and, as it turns out, they were right to do so.
According to PEOPLE, full-page print ads recently appeared in newspapers including the San Francisco Chronicle and the New York Post. The ads show the seven BTS members seemingly standing at a row of urinals in a restroom beneath the headline, "BTS Members Seen in Bathroom amid Mysterious Gathering."
Designed to resemble the front page of a tabloid, the ad swaps the newspaper's name with "BigHit Music," the group's record label. A bright red burst reading "Shocking Photo REVEALED" sits over the bathroom image, while a short article appears below next to a portrait of RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook from their latest album ARIRANG.
"Questions have been raised following a late-night photo appearing to show all seven BTS members together in what appears to be an unexpected setting," the text reads. "While the gathering itself remains unconfirmed, some have questioned whether the situation was entirely normal."
Fans quickly cracked the clue
After fans began sharing photos of the newspaper ads online, many zeroed in on one particular word.
The bolded word "normal" immediately caught fans' attention because "NORMAL" is the title of a song from ARIRANG. The energetic, all-English track has long been rumored to be the album's next single.
BTS has already performed "NORMAL" alongside the album's title track, "Swim," during their comeback show in Seoul and again during a special performance in New York earlier this year. The song has also become a standout moment on the group's sold-out ARIRANG tour, which is wrapping up its European leg in Paris before returning to the United States.
Adding even more fuel to fan theories, BTS recently changed their Instagram profile picture to read "LAMRON," which spells "normal" backward.
A new way to tease new music
BTS is well known for filling music videos, photos, and social media posts with hidden messages that fans eagerly decode. This newspaper campaign, however, marks the first time the group has used local print publications as part of a guerrilla marketing strategy.
The creative rollout earned praise online, with many fans appreciating how the campaign played with the group's relationship with the media.
"I absolutely love the newspaper concept throughout BTS’ single promotions," one X user wrote, noting there's also a faux newspaper headline in their "2.0" music video. "It perfectly reflects the media’s relationship with BTS and the two sides of it: one that highlights their success and achievements, and another that's fueled by gossip and scandals."
The lyrics of "NORMAL" appear to connect with that same idea, touching on the pressures of fame and the challenge of maintaining privacy while living in the public eye.
"Kerosene, dopamine, chemical induced; Fantasy and fame, yeah, the things we choose; Show me hate, show me love, make me bulletproof; Yeah we call this s--- normal; Run away, out of sight, don't know what I want; Wish I had a minute just to turn me off," they sing on the chorus.
The mystery didn't last long
The newspaper's fake article also included another clue pointing toward a major announcement.
"When asked for comment a source familiar with the situation responded, 'We're not in a position to comment any further at this time.' The source declined to elaborate but noted that more information will be revealed on July 17."
That line immediately sparked speculation that BTS would release both a new single and a music video on July 17.
Those theories were confirmed Tuesday morning when HYBE announced the group's plans in an official press release, as reported by PEOPLE. According to the company, BTS "are set to unveil the music video and Korean version of 'NORMAL'," from their fifth studio album ARIRANG. The music video and track will be released exclusively on Spotify on July 17 (ET) before becoming available on all streaming platforms on July 19 (ET)."
After turning newspapers into the latest stop on the BTS clue hunt, the group once again proved that even an old-fashioned headline can become part of a modern comeback.
