Col. Nancy K. Harris Takes Over as Fort Gordon Garrison Commander, Succeeds Col. Kazor

Col. Nancy K. Harris took over as commander of the U.S. Army Garrison Fort Gordon on July 9. She stepped in for Col. Anthony Kazor, who had steered the base through Hurricane Helene and weathered the longest civilian employee furlough the post had ever seen.

This wasn't Harris's first tour at Fort Gordon. Years ago, she worked as both a battalion and a brigade operations officer with the 15th Signal Brigade.

"I'm proud to be back," Harris said of her return to the installation where she once served.

Harris started her military path in the U.S. Army Reserve as a telecommunications operator and maintainer, enlisting from Bristol, Pennsylvania. She later graduated from the University of Pittsburgh ROTC program. Her service stretches across more than twenty years and includes combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Before arriving at Fort Gordon, Harris commanded the 25th Strategic Signal Battalion while stationed at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. That unit supplied strategic communications to U.S. Army Central Command and joint forces operating across the Middle East. Most recently, she worked at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado, serving as deputy executive officer to the commander of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command.

Kazor got the Legion of Merit medal from Janovic before the ceremony started. "What he showed was, 'We're going to move through the crisis and build back again, bigger, stronger and better,'" said Janovic, per  The Augusta Press.

Harris now oversees a $1.6 billion modernization buildout that's creating a cyber defense training campus. It's the largest military construction project happening right now in the continental United States.
