The Grinch may be getting ready for another trip to Whoville.
Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are officially developing a live-action sequel to the 2000 holiday hit How the Grinch Stole Christmas. And if everything goes according to plan, some familiar faces could be returning for the adventure.
According to multiple reports, including Deadline, the studio is currently in talks with Jim Carrey to reprise his unforgettable role as the green, Christmas-hating Grinch. Original director Ron Howard is also being courted to return. While no official deals have been finalized yet, the project is already gaining momentum behind the scenes.
A New Team of Writers Heads to Whoville
To bring the next chapter to life, Universal has enlisted a trio of experienced comedy writers. Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel, known for acclaimed television series such as Barry, Silicon Valley, and Veep, have been tapped to write the screenplay.
Their involvement suggests the sequel could blend the heart and humor of the original film with a fresh comedic approach for modern audiences.
Why Carrey Might Return
Released in 2000, How the Grinch Stole Christmas became a worldwide box office sensation, earning more than $350 million globally and cementing Carrey's performance as one of the most memorable holiday movie characters of all time.
Although Carrey has taken fewer acting roles in recent years, he has previously expressed interest in revisiting the character under one condition. The actor has said he would be open to returning if modern motion-capture technology could replace the lengthy and demanding prosthetic makeup process required for the original film.
Behind the camera, Imagine Entertainment co-founder Brian Grazer is expected to return as a producer, while Susan Brandt of Dr. Seuss Enterprises will oversee development of the project.
For now, fans will have to wait for official casting announcements. But with Universal actively building the sequel and key creative talent potentially returning, Whoville may soon be welcoming back its most famous resident.
