Olivia Rodrigo Teams Up With The Cure’s Robert Smith for First Album Feature

Olivia Rodrigo unveiled "what's wrong with me," her debut collaboration, during a surprise set at Primavera Sound in Barcelona on Saturday, June 6. The Cure's Robert Smith joined her on stage to perform the duet, which will appear on her third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, dropping Friday, June 12.

The 23-year-old singer told the crowd that she couldn't believe the song exists. Smith appeared after she sang the first verse and chorus. The 67-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Famer had headlined the festival the night before with The Cure. It was a unique moment to see two generations and genres of musicians come together.

"I actually cannot believe I got to do [my first feature on an album] with Robert Smith! Somebody pinch me!!!" Rodrigo wrote in a handwritten letter sent to fans Monday through her email service, according to Billboard. "Robert has been soundtracking my life for as long as I can remember. He has written some of my favorite songs of all time."

In the duet, the pair trade verses about feeling lovesick. "I can't eat, I can't sleep, I think you're what's wrong with me," they sing together.

Smith praised Rodrigo's work in an interview with BBC Radio 6 Music. "She's so good. I mean, she is genuinely fantastic as a songwriter and as a singer, as a performer." "I'm slightly in awe of how easy she finds it all."

The collaboration came about after Smith invited Rodrigo to his studio. They spent time together. She told Popcast that she was shocked when he agreed to work with her.

The track marks the third song from the new album with ties to The Cure. Lead single "drop dead" references the band's song "Just Like Heaven." The second single is titled "the cure." Both are streaming now.

These two have been close for a while now. Rodrigo and Smith first performed together at Glastonbury Festival in 2025. She wore a T-shirt that night reading "You know all the words to 'Just Like Heaven,'" which turned out to be a hint at "drop dead" lyrics. Smith wrote on the shirt with marker, "But do you?"

So, the new 13-track album comes out this week, and Rodrigo will tour to support it. She'll launch The Unraveled Tour in September. North American shows run through February before heading to Europe. It's shaping up to be a busy album cycle for the pop star.
