Tony Awards 2026: Pink Soars, Broadway Celebrates, and Surprise Stars Steal the Show

Broadway's biggest night had a little bit of everything.

The 2026 Tony Awards on CBS delivered a colorful mix of spectacular performances, emotional tributes, milestone celebrations, and unexpected celebrity moments. Hosted by Pink, the evening celebrated the best of theater while also honoring some of Broadway's most beloved productions and performers.

From high-flying stunts to anniversary reunions and surprise cameos, the 79th annual ceremony kept audiences entertained from start to finish.

Pink made her Tony Awards hosting debut with an opening number that felt as large as Broadway itself.

The Grammy winner kicked off the night suspended in the air as Peter Pan, singing "I'm Flying" from the classic 1954 musical. The ambitious performance featured more than 170 performers and several celebrity appearances, setting an energetic tone for the evening.

The number leaned into Pink's own status as a newcomer to the theater world. At one point, actor Neil Patrick Harris encouraged her to stop worrying about fitting into Broadway's mold.

But Harris was insistent. "You're Pink. You're singular. You're the best. So just do what you do, it's going to be a great night."

That advice transformed the performance into a Broadway-inspired version of Pink's hit "Lady Marmalade." Reimagined lyrics encouraged her to embrace the role of a "Leading Lady Marmalade" as stars from across the theater community joined the celebration.

The opening also featured appearances from Deborah Cox, Shoshana Bean, Marla Mindelle, Christiani Pitts, Sara Chase, Harvey Guillén, and cast members from this season's biggest musicals.

The opening number was packed with unexpected moments.

Among the night's biggest crowd-pleasers was a cameo from 96-year-old June Squibb, who became the oldest acting nominee in Tony Awards history this year.

Lea Michele also drew laughs with a playful appearance, singing "we don't do this for the awards" in a wink to the season's biggest theater headlines.

Then came one of the night's biggest surprises.

Halfway through the performance, Megan Thee Stallion appeared in character as Zidler from Moulin Rouge! The Musical and confidently declared, "The theater, y'all, is mother's domain."

The rapper joined the opening number wearing a dramatic black-and-gold corset, red velvet overcoat, top hat, and tall boots inspired by her Moulin Rouge! role. Later in the evening, she returned to present an award in a striking halter-neck gown featuring silver detailing and an exaggerated silhouette.

Her appearance capped off a memorable Broadway debut season. During her run in Moulin Rouge!, Megan earned praise for adding her own humor and personality to the role, including playful interactions with audiences and references to her devoted fanbase, the Hotties.

One of the night's most exciting anniversary tributes honored Chicago, Broadway's longest-running American musical.

Oscar nominee Queen Latifah introduced the performance and reflected on the show's remarkable longevity.

"At 30 years and counting, Chicago has proven to have more than just staying power," Latifah said. "And I count myself lucky to share in that legacy."

The tribute featured Alex Newell performing "When You're Good to Mama" before transitioning into "Cell Block Tango," which began with audience participants Dylan Mulvaney, Whitney Leavitt, Adrienne Warren, Julianne Hough, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

The celebration ended with Pink taking center stage for "All That Jazz." She delivered the iconic number while tackling Bob Fosse's legendary choreography, bringing the audience to its feet.

The cast of CATS: The Jellicle Ball brought ballroom energy and a few famous friends to Radio City Music Hall.

During the performance, fashion icon Anna Wintour and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber appeared in the audience holding cat-themed signs reading "Meow" and "Purr" while cheering on the performers.

The reimagined production has become one of Broadway's most talked-about shows thanks to its celebration of ballroom culture and fresh take on the classic musical.

Reflecting on the production's success, Webber shared his amazement at its journey.

"Well, it's just a joy to be here," Webber told PEOPLE on the red carpet on Sunday, June 7. "If somebody told me this time last year, when I was standing in this same space, that it was going to be here this year, I wouldn't have believed you."

"A couple of them said to me this morning they've never been near Radio City," he added about the cast. "Can you imagine?"

Fifteen years after The Book of Mormon first opened on Broadway, its original cast reunited for a special anniversary performance.

Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad returned to reprise their Tony-nominated roles as Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, joined by fellow original cast members Rory O'Malley, Michael Potts, and Nikki M. James.

Before the performance, creators Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Robert Lopez delivered a typically humorous introduction.

"Many, many years ago the great Christian prophet Joseph Smith discovered the Book of Mormon written on golden plates," Parker, 56, said. "He had no idea that he had just discovered a Tony Award-winning musical that has now gone on to endure for over 5,500 performances on Broadway."

The cast then launched into a spirited rendition of "Man Up," reminding audiences why the musical remains one of Broadway's biggest hits.

The evening also took time to honor members of the theater community who passed away over the last year.

Leslie Odom Jr. delivered an emotional performance of "Without You" from Rent during the annual In Memoriam segment. As he sang, images of influential figures from Broadway, film, and theater appeared on screens behind him.

Among those remembered were playwright Tom Stoppard, director Mark Brokaw, actor Harris Yulin, performer Carmen de Lavallade, and actress Sondra Lee.

The tribute concluded with a powerful quote from Rent creator Jonathan Larson:

"Forget regret, or life is yours to miss. No other road, no other way, no day but today."

The moment felt especially meaningful as Broadway also marked the 30th anniversary of Rent, one of the most influential musicals of the modern era.

The 2026 Tony Awards successfully balanced nostalgia with excitement for the future.

The ceremony featured performances from all four Best Musical nominees, including The Lost Boys, Schmigadoon!, Titanique, and Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York), along with all three Best Revival of a Musical nominees: Cats: The Jellicle Ball, Ragtime, and The Rocky Horror Show.
