Aqua, the Danish-Norwegian Eurodance act that gave us "Barbie Girl" in 1997, won't perform live anymore. Lene Nystrøm, René Dif, and Søren Rasted broke the news on May 18, wrapping up three decades as a band.
"After many incredible years, we have decided to close the chapter of Aqua as a live band," the group said, according to The Express Tribune. "When you've been together for this long, you also learn when it's time to protect what you've created together. This feels like the right moment to say goodbye while the memories are still strong, and while the love for the music, the story, and each other remains intact."
The trio started making music in Copenhagen in 1995. Two years later, they became famous when "Barbie Girl" exploded across radio stations. That track climbed to No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts around the world, selling over 3 million copies in America. Other songs, including "Lollipop (Candyman)," "Doctor Jones," and "Cartoon Heroes," also grabbed listeners' attention during their peak years.
Four members originally made up the group. Claus Norreen departed in 2016. Aqua split in 2001 after their second album, Aquarius. They reunited six years later for shows in Denmark and released Megalomania, their third album, in October 2011.
The song found new life in 2023. Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice sampled it on the Barbie movie soundtrack, introducing younger listeners to the track and sparking fresh interest in Aqua's catalog.
Their last show happened at the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival in India in November 2025. The band expressed gratitude to fans in their farewell message.
